Softball falls to Westminster in season opener 11-1 and 5-2 respectively

ELSAH, ILL -- Principia College softball lost game one to Westminster 11-1.  One would have to call this one a rather disappointing home opener. Westminster is a team that Principia matches in skill or is possibly even a little better than but the score doesn't reflect that. Westminster had two big innings that did Prin in. In all fairness, while Westminster did hit a number of balls hard, they also had more than their fair share of seeing eye singles. For a while there it seemed like everything they hit found a hole even when it was hit poorly. Early on Principia had their chances but much like their games in Spalding they left runners in scoring position. They struck out three times with a runner in scoring position.

Prin only managed three hits in the game, two of those coming from Marina Whitney and the other from Andie Raffles. Andie also had two walks and stole two bases. Marina scored the only run of the game for the Panthers and Ali Girbes-Pierce got the only RBI. Ali, playing her first game of the season made some outstanding plays at short stop and looks to have solved Prin's challenge with who to play at short.

Game two went better for the Panthers and they deserved better than they got losing 5-2. The teams bats started to come alive in game two with them getting eight hits but also hitting numerous line drives that went right to a defensive player. The outcome of this game could have been reversed with some of those line drives being a few feet to the left or right. A few offensive miscues also may have cost Prin some runs. Some offensive signals were missed and thus some offensive opportunities never happened.

Andie Raffles had an RBI and another stolen base. Ali Girbes-Pierce went one for three as did Bekah Charlston and Jessy MacMullin. Jessy's hit went for a double and she also did an outstanding job playing her first game at 3rd base making several difficult plays. Marina Whitney had another good game at the plate going two for three again with one of those hits being a double. She also scored a run in this game too. Christine Nacewicz went two for three and also scored a run.
