Softball ends season losing to Fontbonne 6-3 and 10-0
Principia College Athletics
ST. LOUIS, MO. -- These were Principia's last games of the season, and they were against the number one team in the SLIAC. The team's desire was to end the season with a really strong effort. They ended up losing both and played very well in game one losing 6-3, but unfortunately game two was not what a team should end a season on losing 10-0.
Principia threatened in the first inning and then pushed two runs across the plate in the second to take a 2-0 lead. The wheels came off temporarily, and for some reason a very sound defense made several errors and gave up four unearned runs to hand the lead over to Fontbonne. Prin battled back with a run in the fifth and had the tying run at third when the inning ended. Fontbonne added two runs in the sixth and retired Prin's batters in order to end the game in the seventh. One bad half inning in the third was what cost the team a win, but that is what happens when you play good teams. You have to play seven sound innings against good teams.
Jessy MacMullin,
Marina Whitney,
Christine Nacewicz,
Alicia Girbes-Pierce, and
Andie Raffles all had one hit in the game. Andie had one RBI as did Jessy. Marina scored a run and
Casey Lee and
Jocelyn Shoemake also scored a run each.
There isn't really a lot to write about for this game as it really was not how Principia should have ended what has turned out to be a very good season of improvement. Where this team was at the beginning of April and where they are now is significantly different. They have learned a lot about the game and have proven that they can now be truly competitive when they want to be.
Fontbonne is the best team in the conference for a reason, and Prin found out what that looks like today. Fontbonne comes at you aggressively all game long and will exploit any weakness they can find. Hopefully the young Prin team will be inspired to play the game with the same intensity and urgency that Fontbonne showed them to today.
Alicia Girbes-Pierce and
Marianna Distel were the only Principia batters to get a hit in game two. Each of them had one hit with Alicia's being a double.
