ELSAH, ILL.--The Principia women's soccer team got an early lead in the first eight minutes of the game.
Alicia Girbes-Pierce scored a stunning free kick from 20 yards out, beating the Wash U keeper. The 1-0 lead stood at half time. In the 65th minute of the second half, Wash U scored off a shot from outside the box that beat the Principia defense on the back post. At regulation the game stood at a 1-1 stalemate. While both teams had their chances to attack in the first few minutes of overtime, it was Wash U who put the deciding goal away to win the game.
Throughout the game the Principia defense, including,
Carlie Sanderude,
Lauren Wienecke,
Julianna Mangelsdorf and
Cristina Post, did an excellent job thwarting several waves of Wash U attacks. Freshman goal keeper,
Torie DeNicholas, in her first collegiate start, had nine saves on the evening.
Hayley MacWilliams and
Kelly DeWindt played well in the middle winning key tackles and eating up 50-50 balls.
“We played a strong game tonight against a good team.” commented Coach
Meagan Fleming. “Our playing style is continuing to evolve. Tonight was an important game for us because we saw a lot of glimpses of just how good we can be.”
The team “Golden Boot” and the “Lunch Pail” awards for the game went to Girbes-Pierce and T.DeNicholas respectively.
The women's team starts preparing for a double header as they will travel to Chicago this weekend. They will play North Park on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Aurora on Saturday afternoon.
