ELSAH, ILL. -- The Principia College women's tennis team opened their pre-season with a 7-2 win over Lewis and Clark Community College. A highlight of the match was a come from behind win at second doubles. The senior duo of
Courtney Banko and
Marianna Hronek were down 4-1 and then turned on the heat, and won 8-5. They also won their singles matches in a decisive manner. Hronek played #3 singles and won her match 6-3,6-1, and Banko, #4 singles, won her match 6-4, 6-4.
Sophomore
Hilary Frandsen and Freshman
Kelly Adams won their doubles match 8-3. Frandsen, #2 singles, won her singles match with precision and power moving her opponent all around the court before finishing off most of the points with a clean winner. Adams, a freshman, had a tough match at #1 singles and fell to steady Dana McCreary 6-4, 6-0.
Caroline Korthals, a senior, and
Haillie Stock, a junior, dominated at #3doubles. They won 8-1. In singles they faced stiffer competition. Korthals, #5 singles, lost a tough match to Jenna Stevenson, 6-1, 6-0. Stock, #6 singles, won her first set handedly 6-1 but in the second set her opponent Kali Desherlia played consistently and won 6-2. The match was decided by a 10 point super tie breaker which Stock won 10-5.
The team is off to a great start in the 2012 season. Principia women's tennis will host the Principia Invitational this weekend. Four teams will compete in singles and doubles flight competition. Truman, Quincy, and University of Springfield, all Division II teams, will bring their best game to the tournament this Friday and Saturday, February 17th, and 18
