Men's Tennis Splits Matches in Orlando

ORLANDO, FL. – With two wins in two matches already in hand, the Principia Men's Tennis team had a tough two matches today against Earlham College and Iowa Dubuque. Today was a true test of how prepared the Gold and Blue is for the rest of the season.

The first match was against a tough opponent in Earlham College. The Panthers came out sluggish in doubles and were unable to come up with any victories in the doubles matches. Although there were no wins, the first doubles team of Jason Wissman and Nate Waters was able to jump out to an early 3-0 lead before falling 8-4. The 3rd doubles team of Kevin Hagenlocher and Andrew Rohrer also played some solid tennis, but fell short by a score of 8-5.

With no victories in doubles, the men lacked their usual fire in the singles matches. The highlights of the singles matches included Andrew Rohrer at 6th singles and Paul Sanderude at 1st singles. Rohrer was relied on heavily today and he showed everybody just how much he has improved this season. Although he came up short in his match with a 6-1, 6-3 loss, this match was just a glimpse of what was to come later in the day. At first singles, Paul Sanderude played an unbelievable match. After being down 5-2 in the first set, Sanderude was finally able to gain a comfort level with his opponent's huge serve. He was able to win the first set 7-5. After losing the second set, Sanderude was able to regroup and give Principia their only win of the match. He won 7-5, 3-6, 10-5.

Although the team did not have its full lineup, it still competed hard throughout the match. After the 8-1 loss to Earlham, the guys knew they had to regroup in time to play another tough opponent in Iowa Dubuque just hours later.

With a new doubles lineup, Principia came out ready to prove that the mornings match was only a onetime thing. In previous matches this season, taking at least 2 out of 3 doubles matches usually leads to a victory. The Panthers were again able to take two out of three doubles matches vs. Iowa Dubuque. At 2nd doubles, the team of Kevin Hagenlocher and Brian Wold was able to easily dispatch their opponent. By playing aggressive tennis, they won by a score of 8-1. At 3rd doubles, the team of Nate Waters and Andrew Rohrer fought hard for a well earned victory. They were able to win 8-6.

After taking two of the doubles matches, the Gold and Blue only needed three singles victories to secure an overall match victory. At 3rd singles, Nate Waters was able to play some solid aggressive tennis to take control of his match. He was able to win comfortably by a score of 6-1, 6-1. At 4th singles, Kevin Hagenlocher came out strong and took the first set 6-0. After stumbling a bit in the second set, he was able to regroup and win his match 6-0, 6-3.

Needing only one more victory in singles for the match, the men looked to 6th singles Andrew Rohrer, who was just inserted into the lineup today. Rohrer came through in a big way for the team, as he played tremendous tennis throughout his singles match. His consistency proved to be too much for his opponent to handle, as he came away with the 6-3, 6-0 victory. This match was the decisive win that gave Principia the 5-4 victory.

Principia looks forward to the next two days off before they play regionally ranked Oglethorpe this Saturday in Atlanta, GA.
