ELSAH, ILL. – Today, the Principia Men's Tennis Team played their final match of the regular season against Missouri Baptist. In what was the final home match for seniors
Paul Sanderude and
Brian Wold, the Gold and Blue were unable to come away with a victory, and lost 6-3.
The match started off with singles play instead of doubles to ensure that all the singles matches would be played in the daylight. Some highlights for the Panthers were at the 2
nd and 4
th singles spots. At 2
nd singles,
Nate Waters was able to frustrate his opponent with his consistent shot making. After being down 4-3 in the first set, Waters won the final nine games of the match to win 6-4, 6-0. At 4
th singles,
Kevin Hagenlocher never gave his opponent an opening. Hagenlocher seemingly never missed and was able to win 6-3, 6-2. At 5
th singles,
Brian Wold came out strong in his final home match and won the first set 6-4. However, he was unable to build on this momentum and lost in a 3
rd set tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7. At 6
th singles,
Andrew Rohrer also won the first set by a score of 6-4. He too was unable to close out the match and lost 4-6, 6-1, 10-4.
In doubles, the 1
st doubles team of
Nate Waters and
Weston Kalogeridis was unable to pose a threat to their opponents and lost 8-2. At 2
nd doubles,
Kevin Hagenlocher and
Brian Wold could not find their groundstrokes and made many unforced errors in their 8-1 loss. The 3
rd doubles team of
Jason Wissman and
Andrew Rohrer was the lone doubles bright spot for the Panthers. They were able to hit smooth groundstrokes and control the net. They won 8-2.
The Principia Men's Tennis Team is the number one seed for the SLIAC conference tournament this weekend. They play the winner of the Fontbonne vs. Greenville match at 4:30 PM on Friday at Dwight Davis Park. If they win that match, they play in the SLIAC Championship on Saturday morning at 11:30 AM.
