ELSAH, ILL. – After a 3-0 start to conference play, the Principia Men's Tennis Team took a break from conference matches to play against Division 2 opponent, Maryville University. The Gold and Blue were able to play some solid singles and adequate enough doubles to come out of the match with a 7-2 victory.
At 1
st doubles,
Paul Sanderude and
Jason Wissman were able to gut out a tough 9-8 (7-2) victory over their opponents. Although not playing the best tennis, they were able to play solid in the tiebreaker to come away with the match. At 2
nd doubles,
Nate Waters and
Weston Kalogeridis were able to play smart and aggressive tennis to take control of the match. They came away with a comfortable 8-5 victory. At 3
rd doubles,
Kevin Hagenlocher and
Brian Wold dug themselves a hole late in the match that they were unable to dig themselves out of, and came away with a loss, 8-6.
At 2
nd singles,
Jason Wissman played steady tennis, utilizing his powerful forehand to gain control of the points. He came away with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
Nate Waters at 3
rd singles,
Weston Kalogeridis at 4
th singles, and
Brian Wold at 6
th singles all were able to beat their opponents by the margin of 6-1, 6-2. At 5
th singles,
Kevin Hagenlocher played very steady tennis and gave his opponent little to work with the entire match. He came away with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
This win makes Principia 9-2 on the year. The next match is on April 7
th, at home against regionally ranked Carthage College.
