ELSAH, ILL. – Today the Principia Men's Tennis Team faced a tough test in Carthage College. Carthage is a regionally ranked team and provided the Gold and Blue with some stiff competition that will help prepare them for the end of the conference season. Although the Panthers lost 7-2, there were some bright spots during singles play.
Principia dug themselves a hole in the beginning part of their match by not coming out ready to play solid doubles. Both 2
nd and 3
rd doubles were unable to put up much of a fight against their counterparts, and lost relatively easily. At 1
st doubles,
Paul Sanderude and
Jason Wissman faced off against the 2
nd ranked doubles team in the region. Although on serve at 4-5 in the match, they were unable to win any more games against this strong opponent and lost the match 8-4.
The bright moments in singles came at the 3
rd and 5
th spots. At 3
rd singles,
Nate Waters played steady and aggressive tennis all day, and was eventually able to wear down his opponent. Down a break at 5-4 in the first set, Waters was able to break, and then win the set in a tiebreaker. In the second set, Waters was the steadier player and came away with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory. At 5
th singles,
Kevin Hagenlocher played real solid tennis for his match. He gave his opponent very few free points and frustrated him in both sets. He won 6-1, 6-1. At 4
th singles,
Weston Kalogeridis played a very good first set and won his first set 6-4. However, Kalogeridis was unable to keep up this great play and lost both the 2
nd set and the 3
rd set tiebreaker.
This loss drops Principia to 9-3 on the season. Their next match is on Tuesday, April 10
th at Greenville College. Principia will look to regain their momentum and stay on top of the SLIAC in this conference match.
