The Women's Tennis Team opened their conference season with two convincing wins over rival Blackburn College and Greenville College. The morning match against Blackburn was a decisive 9-0 win. The players won almost all of their sets at love. It was a good warm-up match for the afternoon competition. In each of the matches the women kept the balls in play with crosscourt rallies. When the opportunity arose for a change of direction shot or an approach to the net, the Lady Panthers executed the proper shot.
In the second match of the day against Greenville, the team won 8-1. At second doubles, the Greenville duo played aggressively and defeated the Principia duo of
Kelly Adams and
Hanne Andersen 8-6.
Carlie Sanderude and
Sarah Corbitt played decisively won #1 doubles 8-1. At # 3 doubles,
Olivia Ikuma and
Justine Roy also dominated their opponents with heavy topspin shots and aggressive play at net, their score was 8-1.
Principia played 6 singles matches as well as 2 exhibition singles matches.
Fiona Ouma, #7 singles won 6-0,6-1 and
Christina Anderson, #8 singles won 6-1,6-1. In a strong showing of aggressive baseline play,
Olivia Ikuma, #5 singles, defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-0. The scores for all the matches in each dual match are posted below.
The next match for the Panthers is Wednesday against nationally ranked Washington University, St Louis, on their courts. It will be a great opportunity for the team to play against stronger competition from outside our conference. On Thursday, the team plays conference rival Fontbonne in St Louis.
