Principia softball gets left out in the cold at Blackburn

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CARLINVILLE, ILL. --

Blackburn  - 12                        Principia – 3

What a tough outing!  Softball wasn't supposed to be played in 39 degree weather!  It isn't an excuse for the poor performance of the team but it isn't easy to play when you can't feel your fingers.

Blackburn didn't let the weather affect them as they came out swinging their bats.  Principia  was not mentally ready and committed 4 errors and gave up two big innings.  One of the team's goals this season was to not give up big innings and they obviously need to work a little harder towards that goal.  One of the biggest areas of improvement for the softball team this year was cutting down on strikeouts but tonight was different.  There were 7 K's in 5 innings which is not the way it had been so far this season.

Christine Nacewicz and Thanda Kyaw each had 2 hits, both scored a run and one of Christine's hits was a double while Thanda had an RBI.  Casey Lee had a hit and Devon Harrison had the big hit of the game, a 2 run home run.  Unfortunately the other 5 hitters in the lineup went 0 for 12 and that won't get it done.

Blackburn – 10                        Principia – 1

This game in many ways was similar to game 1, too many errors leading to big innings.  Misplayed fly balls, dropped popups and inconsistent communication doomed Principia to another lop-sided loss.  On the plus side the team cut down on their strikeouts.  Unfortunately they did not put many balls in play and the few they hit went right to a defender.  Only one player got a hit and that was Tori Cheatham.  The rest of the team went 0 for 17.  Ouch!!!

Let's hope tonight was a blip on the screen for this team.  They showed a lot of promise in their spring break games in Myrtle Beach so let's hope we see a return to form in their next double header against Westminster.
