FULTON, MO. -- In conference play, the women's tennis team defeated Westminster 9-0, only giving up five games in the competition. Today was the first conference match outdoors this spring and the women warmed up quickly and overwhelmed their opponents with strong steady play from inside the baseline.
Carlie Sanderude at #1 singles had a tough match against Sarah Heeter. Although the score was lopsided 6-0, 6-1, the points and games were much closer. Carlie won most of the rallies with her steady play but did come to the net to close out many points.
Sarah Corbitt, #2 singles, blasted hard baseline ground strokes which her opponent could not return.
Kelly Adams, #3 singles, never let her opponent get used to any shots and mixed up her play with topspin and slice.
Hanne Andersen, #4 singles,
Olivia Ikuma, #5 singles, and
Justine Roy, #6 singles all won their matches 6-0,6-0. They each commanded the play with forcing ground strokes, not allowing their opponents any opportunity to take control.
Fiona Ouma defeated her opponent in an exhibition match 8-2. All three doubles teams played aggressively and won handedly. The match scores are below.
The team's next matches are Saturday. In the morning they play Illinois Wesleyan, a strong regional team, who will test the players. In the afternoon, they play conference rival Eureka. The women hope to improve their 6-3 record and continue undefeated in conference play. Come out to the matches on Saturday and support the Principia Panthers Women's Tennis.
