Softball plays home opener under new lights

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELSAH, ILL. --
Westminster – 7         Principia – 4
This was a pretty darn good battle and likely several of the best innings the team has played this year.  The team has recently been working on being more aggressive and attacking more on offense and defense.  It showed up several times in this game.  In the first 4 innings the team had 6 runners in scoring position but unfortunately left them all on base.  Those were missed opportunities that would come back to haunt them.
They gave up 2 runs in the 5th after committing 2 errors but bounced right back with 3 runs of their own to take the lead.  That was short lived however as they committed 3 more errors in the 6th and gave up 3 runs.  They answered with a run in the bottom of the 6th but committed another error in the 7th to let another run in and that was all the scoring in the game.  6 out of the 7 runs scored against the team were unearned.
Only 4 Principia players got hits in this game and they are going to need a little more offensive production from some of their players if they want to put more runs on the board.  There were 11 strike outs in this game which is uncharacteristic of this team.
Thanda Kyaw, Devon Harrison, Casey Lee and Jocelyn Shoemake all got one hit in this game.  Kelsey Whitney got hits in another way, getting hit by 3 different pitches to find her way on base 3 times.  Devon's hit was a triple and she Thanda, Casey and Kelsey all scored a run while Casey and Jocelyn each drove in a run.

Westminster – 18       Principia – 2
This game really exposed the single biggest challenge this team has and that is being consistent.  They had just finished playing a game which they likely should have won and then it was as if another team took the field.  5 more errors plus several misjudged fly balls blew this game apart.  The team's Pitchers have been doing their job but they are being asked every game to get 4 or 5 outs in several innings due to the number of errors the defense is making.  This team simply has to raise their level of defensive play to be able to compete.  They have proven they can play well defensively they just need to make sure they do it for all 7 innings.
There wasn't a lot of offense in this game as it appeared that the performance on defense leaked into the teams approach to offense.  Thanda Kyaw, Devon Harrison, Kelsey Whitney and Jocelyn Shoemake all got a hit and that was it for offense.
