Elsah, IL--
The women's tennis team flew around the court today and adjusted well to the windy conditions in their 7-2 win over Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU).
Carlie Sanderude and
Sarah Corbitt, #1 doubles, played their best match of the season beating the IWU #1 duo, 8-3. Both players were active, they closed tightly to the net to put away volleys.
Olivia Ikuma and
Justine Roy, #3 doubles, came from a break down to pull out their match 8-6. In a long tough match at #2 doubles,
Kelly Adams and
Hanne Andersen, fell to the IWU duo 9-8, 7-4 in the tie-breaker. It was an exciting set as Kelly and Hanne were down 5-1 before they fought their way back to even the score at 5-5. The teams traded games and forced a tie-breaker.
Sarah Corbitt, #2 singles, played dominating tennis and hit many baseline winners. Sarah finished first with a 6-1,6-3 singles win. At #1 singles,
Carlie Sanderude was steady from the baseline but came to the net to close out points when play dictated a more aggressive approach. The Panthers cinched the match when
Olivia Ikuma, #5 singles, won 6-3, 6-1.
Kelly Adams, #3 singles, beat her opponent in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (5). Kelly's consistent and aggressive baseline ground strokes forced her opponent into errors and weak shots.
Hanne Andersen, #4 singles, battled back from a first set loss to win the second set and the third set super tie-breaker.
Fiona Ouma, #7 singles, played an exhibition match which she won 6-3,,6-4. Our only singles loss came at #6 singles, when
Justine Roy fell to her opponent 6-4,6-4.
This was a good win for the women's tennis team and shows the strength of this year's team. Last year against virtually the same team the Panther's lost 8-1. The team's next match is against the only other undefeated SLIAC team, Webster. The match is at home on Thursday at 4:45. Come out and support the team!!
