Sawyer Grow pitches a gem leads Panthers to 8-3 victory

Box Score ELSAH, ILL. -- Freshman Sawyer Grow got the start in game two and picked up the first win of his career. Sawyer pitched a gem of the game going 8 strong innings, allowing only five hits, two runs, and struck out seven. The Highlands struck for two runs in the third, but Sawyer dominated after that going five scoreless innings.

The Panthers offense shook off game one and struck for three runs in the first two innings. In the first Ed Bargmann walked and then stole second base. Gavin Thomas singled, Scott Ross walked, and then Spencer Clevenger reached on an error and scored the first run. In the second inning, Logan McDowell walked and Connor Coyne doubled in Logan McDowell. Christian Thomas walked and then Gavin Thomas singled in Connor.

Over the next five innings the Panthers were held scoreless. Up 3-2 heading into the 8th inning the Panther offense came alive to score five runs and open the game up. Hunter Mehring walked and then back to back singles with one out by Connor Coyne and Ed Bargmann loaded the bases. Christian Thomas walked and pushed across a run. Gavin Thomas doubled in two runs, Scott Ross singled in a run, and then Spencer Clevenger singled in a run. Dallen Russell followed with a single. The Panthers plated five runs and headed to the 9th up 8-2.

Sophomore Tyler Nichoson relieved Sawyer and after struggling early settled in to finish off the game. Tyler struck out two batters in the inning and did a great job after a leadoff walk. The Panther defense made some excellent plays and overall the team showed great improvement.
