Panther baseball falls to Tigers 8-5

Iowa Wesleyan rallies to take game one of the series 8-5. The Panthers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and got a strong pitching performance from Freshman Hunter Mehring. Hunter pitched 5 strong innings giving up only one run while striking out three. It was a scoreless game heading into the fourth inning when the Panthers took the lead. With one out Spencer Clevenger got hit by a pitch, Dallen Russell walked, and then Logan McDowell singled to load the bases. Hunter Mehring reached on a fielder's choice scoring the first run of the game. Connor Coyne singled in the second run and then Ed Bargmann singled in the third run. Iowa Wesleyan's pitcher minimized the damage by inducing a pop out and then a strikeout to end the inning.

The game remained 3-0 heading into the 6th inning. Freshman Tyler Nichoson relieved Hunter Mehring and got two quick outs. The Panthers were unable to get the third out and the Tigers plated 5 runs to take a 5-3 lead. The Panthers responded in the top of the 7th with two runs. Gavin Thomas singled to start the inning. Scott Ross followed with a walk and Gavin Thomas stole third. Spencer Clevenger singled in the first run of the inning and then Logan McDowell followed with a RBI double.

With the score tied at 5-5 the Tigers struck for 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh to regain the lead 8-5. The Panthers were unable to get a rally going in the 8th or 9th. Offensively, the Panther were led by Logan McDowell who went 3 for 4 with a double and RBI, Ed Bargmann went 2 for 5, and Connor Coyne went 2 for 4. Gavin Thomas and Spencer Clevenger each contributed a single. The Panthers are back in action Saturday for a double header against Iowa Wesleyan. First pitch is scheduled for 12pm.
