The Panthers got great starting pitching from seniors Luke Ball and
Scott Ross as they both threw complete games on senior day. The Panthers won game one 15-4 and won 7-6 on a walk-off hit by freshman
Logan McDowell in game two.
Senior Luke Ball went the distance in game one hurling 7 innings, scattering 7 hits, allowing only one earned run, and striking out 2. Luke also made some great defensive plays on the mound fielding his position extremely well. In the first inning Blackburn College Beavers struck for two runs taking an early 2-0 lead. The Panthers answered plating 6 runs in the bottom of the 1
st.
Ed Bargmann led off the game with a walk and then stole second base.
Spencer Clevenger singled and then stole second base.
Gavin Thomas singled and drove in both runs knotting the game at 2-2.
Hunter Mehring followed with a monster blast to right center and the Panthers took a 4-2 lead.
Christian Thomas walked and the stole second base.
Bryce Murray singled and then
Logan McDowell doubled in the 5th run. With 2 outs
Ed Bargmann singled in the 6
th run of the inning.
The Panthers would add two runs in the 2
nd inning to extend the lead to 8-2.
Hunter Mehring led off the inning with a single and
Dallen Russell followed with a double, which he smashed to the wall.
Bryce Murray walked to load the bases and then
Logan McDowell followed with a walk driving in a run.
Connor Coyne also followed with a walk driving in the second run of the inning.
Luke Ball settled in a pitched a scoreless second and third inning. The Beavers scored two runs in the fourth inning cutting the lead to 8-4. The Panthers would respond scoring one run fourth and fifth and then put the game out of reach with a 5 run 6
th inning. In the fourth inning
Ed Bargmann hit a sacrifice fly to drive in
Logan McDowell who had reached on a double. In the fifth inning
Bryce Murray would drive in a run with another bases loaded walk.
Up 10-4 the Panthers would plate five runs in the 6
th to put the game out of reach.
Ed Bargmann and
Spencer Clevenger singled. Spencer would steal second base and with runners on 2
nd and 3
rd Gavin Thomas would single in both runs.
Christian Thomas would single and then
Scott Ross tripled in two runs.
Bryce Murray would drive in the final run and now the Panther led 15-4. Luke Ball was in control on the mound and pitched three scoreless innings to end the game.
In game two senior
Scott Ross pitched a complete game going the distance hurling 9 innings, scattering 12 hits, allow 6 runs but only 3 earned, and striking out three. This would be Scott's fifth complete game of the season as he improved his record to 3-4 on the season. The Panthers would win the game 7-6 in dramatic walk-off fashion in the bottom of the 9
th.
The Panthers would take an early 2-0 lead after two innings. In the first inning
Spencer Clevenger would walk and then stole second and third.
Gavin Thomas would drive Spencer in with a sacrifice fly. In the second inning
Scott Ross and
Bryce Murray led off with singles.
Ed Bargmann would drive in the second run with a single.
The Beavers would take the lead after a four run third inning and then add one run in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. The Panthers would cut into the lead scoring one run in the fourth and one run in the sixth. With the score 5-4 the Beavers would extend the lead to 6-4 as they would score one run in the 8
th inning.
Down 6-4 heading into the 9
th the Panthers would mount a comeback. With one out
Spencer Clevenger would hit a triple down the left field line as he flew around the bases.
Gavin Thomas would single in Spencer to cut the lead to 6-5.
Hunter Mehring would drive the ball to the gap and the Panthers had runners on 2
nd and 3
rd with one out.
Christian Thomas reached on a fielder's choice as
Gavin Thomas beat the throw home to tie the game a 6-6.
Scott Ross walked and then after a popup
Logan McDowell ripped a single down the left field line to drive in the winning run.
Offensively the Panthers hit up and down the lineup.
Ed Bargmann would finish the day 4 for 8 with 3 RBI's and 3 stolen bases. Ed is tied with Spencer for the lead on the team in stolen bases as both have 20 which is tops in the conference.
Spencer Clevenger finished 3 for 8 with a triple and 4 stolen bases.
Gavin Thomas also finished 3 for 8 with 6 RBI's.
Hunter Mehring finished 5 for 8 with a homerun and double and 2 RBI's.
Christian Thomas finished 4 for 9 with an RBI.
Scott Ross finished the day 2 for 5 with a triple and two RBI's.
Bryce Murray finished 3 for 7 with 2 RBI's.
Logan McDowell finished 4 for 9 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI's.
Dallen Russell finished 1 for 3 with a double and
Connor Coyne also contributed a hit.
It was a great senior day as the Panthers took two out of three from the Beavers. The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup with Lincoln Christian University in Elsah with first pitch at 6pm.
