Women's soccer come up short against Millikin University

Box Score ELSAH, IL-- Tonight the women faced off against Millikin University in a well fought battle.  Millikin gained the lead after a long ball was sent over the top and Panther keeper Libby Lewis hesitated to leave the box for a clear.  Millikin gained their second goal after a soft foul in the box led to a penalty kick.  Millikin's two goals did not deter the Panthers and they continued to fight, creating opportunities.  The panthers finally caught a break when a free kick was allowed near the corner flag.  Junior, Emelie Fredrikson played a beautiful ball to freshman Annika Friborg's head for the easy tap behind the Millikin keeper.  The first half ended with the panthers trailing behind by one goal.

The panthers were not to be discouraged and fought their way to tie the game when Fredrikson head flicked a goal kick to senior, Rachel Perea, who outran the Millikin defense for a one on one with the keeper.  Millikin's keeper made the first save but Perea received the deflection and put the ball in the back of the net.  The game was tied 2-2 until the last 16 minutes after a lack of defensive prowess allowed for a cross and  unmarked Millikin player in the box to put it in.  The panthers fought until the end but were unable to get the equalizer and the game ended 3-2.

Stand out performances of the night include Annika Friborg for her header goal, Tanya Marquardt for her intensity and playmaking in the midfield, and Laura Cluthe and Vanessa Ramirez-Jasso for their tenacity and and quickness coming in off the bench.

The Panthers play again on Saturday, September 24th against Westminster College at 7:00pm.
