Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Principia Men Fall Just Short of Homecoming Comeback

Elsah, IL
Principia College Men's Soccer faced the Tigers of Iowa Wesleyan in a hard-fought Homecoming SLIAC contest on Saturday.  A strong contingent of Alumni, parents, and fans provided great support to the Panthers, who ultimately came up just short of an important result in conference.

Both teams entered the match undefeated in conference play.  Iowa Wesleyan drew 0-0 with Spalding earlier in the week and Principia beat Greenville, 2-0 in their midweek match.

Principia got off to a strong start and capitalized on a long throw-in 5 minutes into the game.  Carson Hussey threw the ball into the six-yard box where Kaden Keller rose above the Iowa Wesleyan defenders to power the ball into the goal with a strong header (his fourth goal of the season).  The first half was back and forth, with both teams creating chances.  Principia held the lead until the 42nd minute, when an Iowa Wesleyan cross dropped in the box that Favio Govea jumped on opportunistically and acrobatically to put in the equalizing goal.  One minute later the Tigers earned a penalty kick and Govea scored his second goal of the match to give Iowa Wesleyan a one-goal lead at halftime (Principia 1 - 2 Iowa Wesleyan).

The Tigers scored first in the second half on a through ball that was finished by Carlos Lopez in the 58th minute (Principia 1 - 3 Iowa Wesleyan).

The Panthers were far from out of the game though.  In the 61st minute, four minutes after Iowa Wesleyan took a two-goal lead, George Agai connected with Cole Heinbaugh who drove in to the box with tenacity and slotted the ball into the near post, just past the Iowa Wesleyan goalkeeper to bring the Principia men back within a goal (Principia 2 – 3 Iowa Wes.).  However, despite numerous efforts, and a total of 10 shots on goal to Iowa's 3, Principia couldn't find the crucial equalizer.  The game ended 2-3 in favor of Iowa Wesleyan.

Principia still has strong standing in conference and they've proved their ability to fight in all conditions.  They will return to SLIAC competition on Tuesday against Fontbonne University at Gay Field in Clayton, MO.  Kickoff is scheduled for 6PM.
