Elsah, ILL. -- The Panthers started off the season with a split against Haskell Indian Nations in their home opener.
Game 1: Principia 5 Haskell 4
In game one the team came out fired up and ready to play. The Panthers had a solid first 4 innings without letting the other team score. In the 5th inning Haskell got on the board with one run, but the Panthers replied with two of their own. The defense for the Panthers was solid all the way up until the 7th inning when the Haskell bats started getting hot and they had hit after hit and Principia had one error.
Leah Schaefer had a good start to the season with three strikeouts and did a great job putting the ball in play for the defense to take care of the out.
The Panthers' offense started strong, scoring in the first inning. Freshman
Delaney Gatine, batted 2 for 4 along with
Hannah Hathaway,
Lauren Daugherty and
Leah Schaefer. Leah also had a double at the end of the game that ended up being the walk off hit to win the game in the 7th inning bringing in Lauren.
Game 2: Principia 8 Haskell 9
After a good start in the first game the Panthers had a bit of a rougher start to the second game. There were several mistakes made by the Panthers throughout the game that Haskell took advantage of and scored off of. The Panthers were the first team to make it on the scoreboard, but they struggled to keep the lead.
Lauren Daugherty lead the team offensively, going 4 for 4, and
Hannah Hathaway had 3 out of 4 hits. Leah also had a double in the game.
