Lincoln, ILL. -- Thursday night Principia traveled to Lincoln College, ready to show some grit and fight to win. Even though the outcomes did not go in the Panthers favor, they battled through both games. Both teams played really well and gave everything they had in both games.
Game 1: Principia 1 Lincoln College 5
In game one, both teams fought really hard throughout the game. The Panthers played a solid defensive game and had some great hits on offense. There was a lot of fight in both teams to make good outs.
Offensively, the Panthers only had five hits, making it hard to win the game. There were well hit balls, but not all of them made it to the outfield, or they went straight to a defender who made an out. The Panthers scored their only run in the third inning.
Delaney Gatine,
Elise Doyle and
Christina Redington all had one hit and
Lauren Daugherty had two hits.
On defense, the Panthers had several solid innings where they made great outs. Lincoln College scored most of their runs in the second inning. The Panthers struggled in that inning, making several errors that put Lincoln on top. Other than that one inning, the Panthers played very well in the first game. The outfield made great catches, especially with wind speeds of almost 20 mph.
Game 2: Principia 2 Lincoln College 10
In game two, the Panthers started well and picked up from where they left off in game one. Since Lincoln College won game one, the Panthers were eager to try and stop them from winning the second. Principia battled through every inning, making routine defensive plays and also putting runners on bases.
Offensively, the Panthers put the ball in play, although not enough of the hits found their way past Lincoln's defensive hands. Freshman
Delaney Gatine started the Panther's offensive efforts by hitting a triple, but did not end up getting hit home. Gatine also had a single, as well as
Lauren Daugherty and
Genie Nyiramana. The Panthers scored only in the third inning.
Defensively, Principia started of really strong. Lincoln College scored in almost every inning, but the Panthers kept nearly every inning to only one run. However, when it came to the bottom of the sixth inning, the Panthers struggled with making outs. They started making one error after another, which Lincoln College took advantage of and made Principia pay for. Lincoln College ended up winning by mercy rule.
Leah Schaefer pitched both games.
