Game Recap: Softball |

Softball plays tough in loss to Fontbonne University

St. Louis, MO. -- Today the Panthers faced Fontbonne in games that were rescheduled from Saturday due to weather. Principia was ready to face another conference team and hoped to play two tough games against a formidable opponent. After a week of no games, the Panthers were excited to play again.

Game 1: Principia 2 Fontbonne 8
In game one, both teams came out firing and ready to play one another. Even though the score was not in the favor of the Panthers, they played all seven innings and left it all out there. Both teams battled throughout the game, but Fontbonne had a bit more success on the offensive side than the Panthers.

Over the first two innings, both teams shut down the offense and prevented them from scoring. Principia was the first team to score, putting up two runs in the third inning. Delaney Gatine, Hannah Hathaway, Lauren Daugherty, and Christina Redington all had singles, and Leah Schaefer hit a double. After that inning though, the Panthers could not find the grass again. There were several hard hit balls but Fontbonne's defense was all over the ball, making some great outs.

The Panthers had a very solid defensive game. The first two innings the Panthers got three outs right away but then struggled a little bit over the next two innings. In the third and fourth innings, the Panthers struggled with getting outs and Fontbonne took advantage of it and put some runs on the board. Over those two innings, the Panthers made five errors that could affect them in the long run. After those two rough innings, though, the Panthers came back and shut down Fontbonne in the last two innings, holding them to only eight runs.

Game 2: Principia 0 Fontbonne 10
In game two, the Panthers struggled to hit the ball on offense and make simple plays on defense. It was not the outcome they were expecting but they fought through every inning. Even though the Panthers only played five innings in this game, they left it all out there.

On offense, the Panthers had a hard time getting the ball past the infield. There were several well-hit hard balls that went straight into the defense's gloves, some of them being double plays just because they happened so fast that our runners couldn't get back to their base fast enough. Alyssa Hudenburg and Hannah Hathaway were the only players to have hits in the second game.

Defensively, the Panthers played several solid innings, only allowing two runs in the first inning and then shutting the Griffins down in the second one. In the third inning, though, the Panthers struggled to make routine outs. The Panthers had 6 errors that allowed Fontbonne to score eight runs in that one inning. Alyssa Hudenburg pitched for the Panthers in the second game, giving Leah Schaefer a break after pitching in game one.
