Elsah, ILL. -- Over the last few years, the Principia Greenville match ups have been good ones. Today started off no different.
Alex Stamos started on the mound with a fresh arm for the Principia Panthers coming off long rest. Greenville jumped ahead in the first, sneaking three across the plate on three hits and two errors.
In the bottom of the first,
Stephen Strong got things started with a base hit. Two walks later the bases were loaded for
Zach Grennie who singled in a run to cut the lead to two. Greenville scored two more in the second on a home run to centerfield.
Stamos settled in on the mound and at the plate as well. In the bottom of the 3rd he helped his cause by singling in a run making the score 5-2.
The Panthers added another in the 4th to cut the lead to two. Both pitchers would bare down and threw a couple scoreless frames.
In the top of the 7th, Greenville struck again. Back-to-back two-out singles stretched the lead to five and knocked Stamos from the game.
Jack Adler threw to a single batter doing his job striking out the first batter he faced for the third out.
Nathan Wood entered and threw a solid 8th inning only allowing one run and picking up his first strike out of the season. The Panthers ran out of steam in the 9th and allowed Greenville to run away with the game picking up 5 runs on 3 hits and four walks.
Greenville took game one from the Panthers 14-3, but the Panthers matched Greenville's 11 hits with 11 of their own. The difference in the game was the 6 errors committed by the Panthers compared to Greenville's one error.
Closer than the final score showed, look for Principia to come out strong tomorrow as the Panthers will face Greenville in a double header that starts at 1pm.
