Elsah, IL — The Principia Women's Soccer team faced off against the Greenville Panthers in a hard-fought battle. It was the best offensive game the Panthers had against a good team this season. With many shot attempts, Principia challenged Greenville's defense. However, Greenville would catch a break after being rewarded a penalty kick from a handball to put them ahead 1-0. Despite the hard-nosed defense by Kiona Sperr, Kaija Ufert, Allie Bane, and Olivia Scott, Greenville would get another goal to end the half, with Principia trailing by 2.
The Panthers never quit and battled to the end. Principia's efforts to get a goal consisted of two free-kicks by Georgia Rather. The Greenville goalkeeper would tip one for a corner. Another would hit the crossbar and barely missed Sophie Hills, crashing the goal. Other opportunities came from Viviane de Castro maneuvering through the box after combining with Adriana Rucks. Principia's efforts would finally be rewarded in the second half with a goal by freshman Rachael Williams.
The game would end with the Panthers losing 1-4, but it was an exciting game, and Principia played well.
"Ufert was a beast today, shutting down Greenville's attack from the left. Williams and Edner Oloo ran their hearts out on the wings. De Castro's dynamic movement up top helped create opportunities. The composure and tenacity by our center mids Scott, Hills, and Rucks dictated our tempo," commented head coach Meagan Fleming.
Up Next: The Panthers are starting to hit their stride at the right time of the season and are looking forward to their away game against Spalding University on Tuesday, October 26th, at 8 PM EST.
