St. Louis, MO- Tonight's match against Fontbonne was another tough loss for the women's soccer team, 0-1. The Panthers stepped up defensively in tonight's rematch against the Fontbonne Griffins, leading to a closer match.
Even though the Panthers played a heavily defensive game, they had a solid focus on holding their shape to win the ball back from the Griffins and work it up the field. In the second half, the Panthers created their only opportunity of the night when Georgia Rather received the ball under pressure, dribbled a defender, and broke away downfield to take a shot that the Griffin's keeper narrowly saved. Leslie Barrera played a fantastic game with 16 impressive saves. Also center back and team Captain Kiona Sperr held the back line along with center back Olivia Scott. Together the two communicated with the field, helping to keep the team's structure while clearing balls and tackling the Griffin's forwards.
"We did what we needed to do. It was a hard-fought battle. We showed excellent discipline tonight, and it paid off. The coaches are very proud of the team tonight," said Meagan Fleming.
Up Next: The Principia Panthers will take on the Webster Gorloks in St. Louis this Saturday, October 9th, at 1:00 pm.
