ELSAH, IL – The Principia Men's Soccer team hosted rival Fontbonne University for a conference tilt on Tuesday evening. The Panthers were looking to bounce back from their second SLIAC loss of the season last Saturday at Webster.
The Griffins got on the board early with a perfectly placed shot inside the left post in the 10th minute. This proved to be all Fontbonne needed as they kept the Panthers at bay all night. Despite the Panthers having the majority of the possession and firing 4 times as many shots as Fontbonne (20-5), they were unable to put one past the Griffins goalkeeper, Dominic Haggard.
With six minutes to play in the game, the referee awarded a penalty kick to Principia due to a Fontbonne foul in the box off a corner.
EG Pierce stepped up to take the PK, but Haggard got the better of him as he guessed correctly and made a big save diving to his left. Haggard then made a quick follow-up save on
Jimmy Woodrow off the rebound to preserve the 1-0 lead. One final diving save from Haggard with a minute to go off a flying volley from
Christian Tresoldi gave the Griffins the hard-earned shutout victory.
Up Next: On Saturday at Greenville, the Panthers will try to get back in the win column and avenge their loss to the fellow Panthers earlier this season. Kickoff is set for 5:00 pm.
