CARLINVILLE, IL - Principia Softball traveled to Blackburn College on Tuesday to take on the Beavers in their second matchup of the season. Despite losing both games, the Panthers allowed their fewest combined number of runs in a doubleheader (18), and committed their fewest number of errors in a doubleheader (5).
In addition to solid pitching by
Avery Cobb and
Victoria Columbus, the Panthers continued their improved defensive play behind their freshmen hurlers.
Karen Trevor-Roberts and
Wasa Staley had impressive catches in the outfield. All three outfielders, including
Cate Farson in center field, did a good job of keeping the ball in front of them and hitting the cutoff to hold hitters to singles. This, combined with continued solid play in the infield, led by shortstop
Gracie Paul, kept the Panthers in both games.
Just like in their previous game vs Webster, Cobb again spoiled a no-hitter for Blackburn's pitcher with a nice single in the top of the fourth of game one. Principia also scored their third run of the season in game two when Columbus walked and came around to score on an RBI single by
Leslie Barrera, her first hit of her career.
Up Next: The Panthers host another strong conference opponent on Saturday when Greenville University comes to town for 12 PM start.
