CARLINVILLE, IL – The Principia Men's Soccer team faced off with the Blackburn College Beavers on Saturday afternoon. Despite dominating the possession, the Panthers couldn't find the back of the net and earned a 0-0 draw.
The game started off slow with Principia having the majority of the ball. Blackburn stayed compact and made it difficult for the Panthers to play and kept their chances in the first half to a minimum. One opportunity came from
Wizzy Afrani when he himself on a breakaway but his shot was saved by the keeper.
Effenberg Joya also created a chance for his team breaking down the flank and crossing a ball that was nearly taped in.
In the second half, Principia continued to have more of the ball. Chances for the Panthers came from finding gaps in between the Blackburn defense and having their wide players run on to them. A flurry of chances came for the Panthers in the last ten minutes as they were chasing the late winning goal. One such chance came when Joya received a through ball and was able to dribble around a Beaver keeper and then lay off to teammate
Walter Lazo, who rang a shot off the post. Afrani and
Zach Lemasters also found themselves in positions to score but missed their opportunities. The Panthers finished the game with 15 shots, 9 of which were on goal.
While the Panthers felt they could have gotten more done in the 90 minuets, they did come away with a point and their third shutout of the season.
Torben Rehnert made four saves for his third clean sheet.
