GREENVILLE, IL – The Principia women's basketball program's losing streak to Greenville University reached 25 games on Tuesday night as the Panthers lost their first conference game of the season, 84-63.
After breaking their habit of slow starts vs Lyon last Saturday, Principia reverted back to their old struggles early on in a big way. Tied 2-2 in the first minute, Greenville then went on a crazy 21-0 run over the next six minutes as everything was going the way of the home team. By the end of the first quarter, Principia was trailing 31-7 and in need of a spark. Some strong play off the bench from
Erinn Porter and three big three-pointers from
Hannah Myers helped Principia finally get going, and though they would win the second quarter 20-19, they still trailed by 23 at halftime.
The third quarter has been Principia's strongest quarter all season, and that continued in this one as they opened the second half on a 12-0 run thanks to two threes each from
Ariana Williams and
Taylor Brown. Unfortunately, that was as close as Principia would get as the home Panthers kept the visiting Panthers at bay the rest of the night and eventually won by 21 points. Principia will look for revenge at home next month when they get another chance at ending their long drought against GU.
Taylor Brown continued to lead the Panthers in scoring as she finished with 22 points to move within 103 of 1000 points in her career.
Erinn Porter had by far the best game of her young Principia career with 11 points (9 more than her previous high).
Principia will try to bounce back on Saturday afternoon when they host conference powerhouse Webster University in a huge test for the Panthers. Come support the team in Hay Field House at 1:00 pm!
