ELSAH, IL – The Principia women's basketball team hosted recent conference powerhouse Webster University on Saturday looking to get a statement win in their first matchup of the season. After the Gorloks took an first half lead, they were able to hold off a Principia comeback to defeat the Panthers 65-56.
The Panthers had a nice bounce back beginning to the game after a rough first quarter the game before at Greenville. Principia led 10-3 after a
Hannah Myers three-pointer halfway through the opening frame, and still held onto a 14-9 advantage by the end of the quarter. The Gorloks began to impose their will in the second quarter, outscoring the Panthers 21-10 to lead by six at halftime.
Webster built their lead to 13 near the end of the third, but Principia was determined to come back and make it a game. After two made Panther free throws with nine minutes left in the game, a
Lamiya Terrell steal turned into a big three by
Taylor Brown. Then a quick steal by
Carolina Rojas turned into lay up by
Trinniti Matthews to get Principia within just three points of tying the game. Webster called timeout to reset and was able to rebuild their lead and close out the game to win by nine.
Principia was led by
Hannah Myers with 13 points including 3 splashes from downtown. She also added 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and 4 steals.
Taylor Brown also finished in double figures with 11 points and 7 boards.
Lamiya Terrell continued to excel on defense with 7 steals on the day.
The Panthers have another important test on Tuesday at home against Westminster College. Come cheer on the team at 5:30 pm!
