LOUISVILLE, KY – The Principia women's basketball team traveled to Kentucky on Tuesday for their second matchup of the season with the Spalding Golden Eagles. After winning their first meeting in December, the Panthers were unable to complete the sweep, losing a back-and-forth game 61-52.
The first half was fairly even as Spalding held a seven point lead at the break. With two minutes left in the third quarter and the Golden Eagles up by nine, the Panthers stepped up their execution with a 8-0 run to close the quarter highlighted by a big
Hannah Myers three pointer in the final minute. Myers finished with a team-high 14 points on the night.
The strong play by Principia on both ends of the court would continue to open the fourth as the Panthers stole the ball on three straight Spalding possessions and took a 43-41 lead on a Myers lay up. With the momentum swinging towards Principia, Spalding regained their composure and responded with a 10-2 run to retake the lead which they would never relinquish. The loss sends Principia to 7-4 in conference play, still tied for third place in the standings.
The Panthers return home for an important four-game homestand beginning on Saturday against Eureka, one of the teams right behind Principia in the standings. The game will tip off at 1:00 pm as both the women's and men's programs welcome many of their alumni back to campus for the weekend.
