ELSAH, IL – The Principia men's and women's basketball teams opened a four-game homestand this weekend when they hosted Eureka College. After both the men and women had beaten Eureka on the road earlier this season, the Red Devils got their revenge on Saturday by knocking off each Panther squad by double digits.
In the women's game, the Panthers kept the game close for most of the afternoon, but Eureka's hot three point shooting and superior rebounding kept Principia from making a comeback. Though the Eureka lead was only two late in the third quarter, the Red Devils pulled away in the fourth and won by a final of 84-67.
Taylor Brown had with a team-high 21 points for the Panthers, while
Hannah Myers and
Lamiya Terrell also finished in double figures.
In the men's game, Principia played a strong first half and went into halftime with a two-point lead at 30-28. The Panthers continued to keep things close to begin the second half with the game still tied at 52 with 9:37 remaining. The Red Devils then went on a decisive 13-0 run and closed out the game with a 77-67 victory.
Alumni from both Principia programs were in attendance with an alumni dinner and scrimmage scheduled for after the games ended. The scrimmage has become an annual tradition for the men's alumni over the last ten years, and this year's edition was a fun and exciting contest with the white team beating the blue team 91-87.
Both programs will attempt to get back in the win column next Thursday when they lost Lyon College beginning at 5:30 pm.
