BLOOMINGTON, IL – Select members of the Principia track & field opened up their campaign on Friday at the Titan First Chance meet hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University. The season-opening invite gave some athletes a chance to get in some early practice competing before the new year.
The biggest story of the day for the Panthers was senior
Marc-Quan Daniels breaking a 34-year school record in the shot put – the longest-standing indoor track & field record at Principia. Jim Pittinger's 13.18 meter toss in 1991 had held up throughout the years until Daniels' fifth attempt on Friday smashed that mark with an impressive 13.63 meters (44' 8.75"). The massive heave was a personal best for Daniels by over a meter.
Daniels (12.26 m) and fellow senior thrower
Mark Fisher (13.60 m) also PRed in the weight throw. Fisher currently leads the conference in that event as he'll look to win the event at conference like he did in the hammer throw outdoors last spring.
Elsewhere, freshmen sprinters
Chris Clark (60m & 200m) and
MiKing Ettress (60m & long jump), along with freshmen throwers
Ashtun Baker (shot & weight),
Tyler Standridge (shot & weight), and
Nekoda Burnett (shot) all got in their first taste of collegiate competition.
