JACKSONVILLE, IL – The Principia women's soccer team opened the season with a close 1-0 loss on the road at Illinois College on Friday night.
The Panthers' player of the game was senior goalkeeper
Christin Walls who was peppered with shots all evening and made 16 saves to keep Principia in the game. The Lady Blues broke through in the 34th minute with a goal by Aliza Rodriguez that ultimately proved to be the difference.
The Panthers did come out with renewed energy in the second half, and one of Principia's best opportunities to level the game came in the first minute of the second half.
Dachelle Carter got free on a breakaway thanks to a good tackle and pass from
Zayana Brown, but her shot missed over the crossbar as the IC goalie ran out and applied pressure. By the end of the match, the Panthers had been outshot 35-2 and could not come away with an equalizer.
The Principia women will be back in action next Saturday in Wisconsin at Mount Mary University at 2:00 pm.
