Women's soccer beats Fontbonne 6-1

ST. LOUIS, MO. -- The Panthers won in tonight's matchup against Fontbonne University 6-1. The Panthers opened the scoring in the 23rd minute of the game from a short corner kick that was played from Alicia Girbes-Pierce to Cristina Post who then found Hanna Mehring at the corner of the 18 who had the goal winning shot. It was a beautiful shot that dipped over the Fontbonne keeper into the upper right hand corner of the net. T

he Panthers kept attacking the Fontbonne goal, however, were unable to find the back of the net. As a result, the Panthers left the half with a 1-0 lead. Upon returning to the second half, the Panthers got their second goal when Girbes-Pierce found the Fontbonne keeper off her line and chipped the ball over the keeper and into the net. In the 81st minute of the game, Rachel Publicover received the ball in the middle of the goal box from a cross by Carlie Sanderude. However, upon Publicover's reception, the ball went flying towards Fontbonne's end line. Freshman Sierra Powell was in great position and hit the ball back across the goal line and into the net making it her very first collegiate goal!

The Panther's fifth goal was from a perfectly placed pass past the Fontbonne defense by Post who found Leticia Dias running through the middle who took the shot for the goal. With about 37 seconds left on the clock, the Panther's final goal was created by Hayley MacWilliams who passed the ball through the middle to a running Publicover who scored making it her second goal of the game. The Panther defense did a great job in keeping possession which allowed for the team to get into the attack.

The lunch pail award goes to Hayley MacWilliams and Hanna Mehring who did a great job controlling the pace of the game. The golden boot was awarded to Sierra Powell for her hard work and great run which ended in a goal!

The Panthers play again this Saturday at home against Webster University.
