Principia College Athletics
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Well, this years' team didn't waste any time getting win # 1 under their belt. After seven long weeks of practicing and only able to practice outside three times the squad did themselves proud in their season opener.
Suffolk University took the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning that Principia answered in their half of the first. The same thing happened in the third inning but in the fourth, when Suffolk scored another run Principia didn't answer. Not to fear though, the team came through with three runs in the bottom of the sixth and
Andie Raffles, pitching in relief shut the door on Suffolk with a scoreless seventh inning.
On the offensive side of things, Andie went two for three, scored three runs and hit the first triple of the season.
Jessy MacMullin and
Christine Nacewicz also scored and each earned a hit in the game.
Marina Whitney and
Devon Harrison also came through with a hit each.
Devon Harrison started the game on the mound and put in five solid innings. She gave way to
Andie Raffles in the sixth, and Andie finished the game and earned the win with 2 good innings of relief work. Final score 5-3.
Game two of the teams first day was a test for sure. Barton College is a Dll school from North Carolina that had already played 20 games this season. The cool thing about this group of Principia softball players is that they were completely unimpressed with playing a Dll school. They put in a good effort and were not outclassed.
Barton jumped out to an early two run lead after the first inning and added another one in the second. Prin answered with a run in the top of the third inning but got a little sloppy and gave Barton four runs in the bottom of the third. It stayed that way until the fifth when the Lady Panthers hit for two runs. Unfortunately, Barton got those two runs back in the bottom of the inning. Undaunted the team answered with three runs in the sixth and sent a loud and clear message to Barton that we were not going away. Barton did come up with a timely hit in their half of the sixth to score two runs. Prin had two runners in scoring position in the seventh before finally giving up the third out to end the game.
Devon Harrison had an outstanding offensive game as well as making a hi-lite reel catch as short stop. Dev had three hits in the game and scored three runs. One of her hits was a double and she also drew a walk.
Casey Lee was the other multiple hit getter in the game going two for four. Others getting a hit on the day were Jessy MacMullin,
Marina Whitney,
Andie Raffles,
Christine Nacewicz,
Bekah Charlston and
Tavia Patterson.
Casey Lee was the starting pitcher and held her own for four innings before giving way to
Andie Raffles who came in relief again and pitched the final two innings.
