The Principia College women's basketball team took on St. Mary of the Woods College in a tough battle in Terre Haute, Indiana. The Panthers fought hard, but in the end were unable to overcome their numerous turnovers and missed shots, falling to SMWC 70-64.
The Panthers started off the game with a bang, as Spencer Randolph took the opening tip in for a lay up to give Principia a 2-0 lead. After falling behind 18-8, the Panthers started a 9-0 run off of a short baseline jumper by Isabella Perea. Summer Switzer put the Panthers in the lead with an offensive rebound and put back, making the score 21-20.
After being up 30-29, the Panthers began to unravel. With turnovers and missed shots, Principia was soon down 43-36 at the half.
In the second half, foul trouble for Rachel Perea and Karina Olsen put the Panthers in a bind. Despite playing much of the half without two of their starters, the Panthers fought hard. It would have been easy for Principia to fall apart after losing two starters and being down 63-54 late in the game, but they fought hard. Some great hustle and determination brought the score closer. Randolph made it 65-62 with two free throws, and then McKinzie Wilgus closed it again to 68-64 with a long jumper with 2:27 left. The Panthers would be unable to score any more points, losing 70-64.
Some notable efforts come from Karina Olsen who had 10 points and an amazing 20 rebounds. Summer Switzer had 13 points and 18 rebounds. Spencer Randolph had 10 points and 9 rebounds. Rachel Perea finished with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Izzy Perea played great off the bench and had 8 points on 4/6 shooting from the field.
It was another close loss for the women's team, as they continue to grow and get ready for conference. Their next game is at Hayfield House on Dec. 3rd against Stephens College. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
