Principia volleyball wins season opener 3-0

Box Score ELSAH, Ill. -- The volleyball team has a different look this year after graduating four seniors. The team welcomed six freshmen to the court, and with eight returning players, Principia is reloaded and ready to compete.

Principia got off to an early 12-4 lead against the College of Pharmacy Eutectics with consistent serving and solid defense. Pharmacy found some steam and pulled themselves up by the bootstraps with a few strong hits and some persistent play. Despite their best efforts, game one went to Prin 25-18.

Game two was another story. The Panthers went down 1-5 before getting their offense started. The Panthers remained diligent to their game plan and just kept competing. It wasn't pretty, but the women kept at it, working to find some rhythm. That persistence paid off when the score was tied 24-24, and the Panthers put together a couple of bold points, ending the game with a huge kill from freshman Sophia Hathaway. Game three was all Prin, and the match ended with a 25-12 clean sweep.

The Panthers enjoyed some nice runs of in-a-row serving that were key to revving up their game. Sophia Hathaway kept the pressure on with pinpoint serving—she served 23 with one ace and 100%. Sierra Sprague served 14 with an ace, and Emma Herman served 11 at 100%. Freshmen Emily Tippetts and Sophia Hathaway hit .400 and .375 respectively and combined for 12 kills.

Prin travels to Monmouth this weekend to continue opening-week competitions!
