Principia Volleyball pushes through adversity to 1-1 on the day with loss to top ranked Greenville and victory over Iowa Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Louisville, KY. -- After a grueling match Friday night, the Prin women took on top ranked Greenville College at 11am Saturday. Greenville controlled the match and Prin was working hard to create any momentum. The team stole a game from Greenville 25-23, but Greenville's offense proved a bit much for Prin's net and back court defense. However, Noelle Shoemake and Emily Tippetts each tallied four block assists, with Emily scoring two solo blocks as well, and Sierra Sprague and Mia Gill picked up 11 and 10 digs.

Greenville's defense was tough too, making it hard to put balls down. Sophia  Hathaway led the offensive effort with 11 kills, and Lily Richards and Sierra put down 6 and 5 respectively. Emma Herman was nails at the service line with 3 aces.  Greenville won 3-1.

After a 30 minute break, it was time to compete against Iowa Wesleyan. It was an exciting match for sure! The battle began with a knock-down-drag-out game one that found IWU on top 27-25. IWU was in the driver's seat for all of game two, and Prin was caught in a struggle-fest.  It might have seemed like Prin was "done for", but this group of women has proved themselves fighters, and fight they did! Down 0-2 in the third match in 20 hours, the Panthers clawed their way back into contention. The first run of goodness was behind the serving of Emily Tippetts, and a little later Lily Richards had a run of serves that helped the Panthers come alive. Game three was a consistent and confident  25-16 Prin win. Game four started out with strong serving from Molly Moser and a leap into a 7-0 lead. Next Sierra served up four in a row with some strong Panther defense to create an 11-1 gap. Three kills from Sophia, Molly, and Sierra helped catapult this game to a 25-17 win. Game 5 was tense – tied eight times until Prin pulled ahead to 14-10. But, that was not the end. Iowa kept pounding the ball and pushed the door open narrowing the lead to 14-13. Gulp! The Panther pass got the ball up to setter Molly Moser who connected on the outside with Sophia Hathaway for the final point, and the coveted "W".

Sophia ended her weekend with a highlight match -  three service aces and 100% serving, 18 kills, 18 digs, and a block assist! Iowa was strategic in their attack plan, making Prin work for their digs. Sierra led the defense with 21 digs, and Emma picked up 20, and Molly 19. Sara Stephenson blocked three balls, two assisted by Molly Moser.   Prin showed some nice depth offensively, with Emily putting down 10 kills, Sierra 9, Molly 7, Lily 5, and Sara 4.
