Principia Volleyball Fights for Victory in Marathon Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Monmouth, Ill. -- The volleyball team travelled to Monmouth for a six team tournament that kept them playing 10:30 am – 6:15 pm! Warm up, and three straight matches pushed the Panthers to give their all for nearly 8 hours.

The day started with a match against Lincoln Christian University, who would eventually win the tournament. The Panthers took LCU to four games, but came away with the loss. Principia then took on Illinois College and persisted for five games to earn the win. The last match of the day for Principia was against MacMurray, and despite their best efforts the Panthers could only take one out of four games.

It was a great day for the Panthers to figure some things out, and to get the competitive repetition that will propel them into conference competition. The big victories of the day were in great team play. The team worked hard and fairly successfully to stick with what we have been working on, and to execute offensively.  The offensive production was extremely well rounded with Sophia Hathaway, Sierra Sprague, Lily Richards, Emily Tippetts, Molly Moser, and Noelle Shoemake all scoring well. The depth of their defensive efforts was exciting as well – with solid back row play from Sierra, Lily, Noelle, Cha Cha Fisher, Emma Herman, and Mia Gill, and the new setting team of Sophia and Molly got plenty of opportunities to embrace their new role.

Sophia Hathaway led the offensive charge with 10 kills against LCU, and 14 and 11 kills against IC and MacMurray respectively, and in the final two matches Sophia had zero errors.  This offense combined with very effective setting earned Sophia a spot on the All-Tournament Team! Congratulations Sophia!

Sierra was the center of the Panther defense, tallying 68 passes and 60 digs for the day.  Emily was the lone Panther 100% from the service line, but Molly served up 7 aces on the day, and Sierra 4.

Principia hits the road on Tuesday for a Lincoln Christian rematch. Watch out Angels!
