Lady Panthers defeat Robert Morris Springfield in OT battle

St. Louis, MO. – The Principia College Women's Basketball team played against Robert Morris Springfield tonight in a "home" contest held on the Principia School campus in St. Louis.  The gym was packed with fans from the St. Louis area, including many Principia alums.

The Panthers started off a little slow, falling behind in the first quarter 8-19, but then started their fight back and found themselves within eight points of the Eagles by halftime.

After being outscored in the 3rd quarter, the team fought back and scored 27 points in the fourth quarter to tie up the game and send it into overtime.  In overtime the Panthers outscored Robert Morris 15-10 and brought home their first victory of the season.

The Panthers out-rebounded the Robert Morris Eagles with 58 total rebounds.  Principia shot 94% from the free throw line, and shot 60% from the field in the fourth quarter.

Key moment:
Junior Sophia Hathaway led the Panthers in scoring with 38 points and 23 rebounds, while sophomore Nikki Matters contributed 22 points.  It was a total team effort for Principia, with the team displaying tough defense and patience running the offense in the 4th quarter.

Good to know:
This was the first game of the season with all 11 players.  Nikki Matters and Anna Webster have returned from their Principia Abroad in Peru.

They said it:
"This was a great game for the team. Robert Morris and Principia were very evenly matched and it was exciting until the end.  I can't say enough about how important it was that the team was 18-19 from the free throw line.  The players have been working hard on their free throw shooting and it has paid off."
