Pasadena, Ca--
On a perfect tennis day in Pasadena, California the women's tennis team lose 8-1 to the Cal Tech Beavers, ranked #38 nationally in NCAA Division III competition.
Paige Cooley, #1 singles, fell behind 5-2 in the first set and fought her way back to a tie-breaker with a strong baseline game. She hit some fantastic angle forehands and backhands that her opponent was not able to reach. Paige forced play and came to the net cinching the advantage with several well placed volleys. Paige evened the first set at 6 all and then went ahead in the tie-breaker winning it 7-3. In the second set, Paige took a 4 game lead, when the opponent came back to win a couple of games, before Paige closed out the second and deciding set 6-2.
Cal tech won both of the doubles matches with strong net play. Principia did not field a third doubles team because they were short-handed when only 5 players could compete. That meant that they were down by 2 matches, 3
rd doubles and 6 singles, before the matches even began. At first doubles there were many good points but the Panthers made too many errors at net. At second doubles the opponents forced play and made aggressive poaches.
In singles, except for #1 singles, the players were not as steady as they needed to be and often made unforced errors. The complete match scores are below.
Principia women's tennis will pick it up Saturday morning against Redlands University, #28 in the Nation, at the Redlands campus. Come out and support the team!
