Anderson, IN. – The Women's Basketball team opened the season with a game at Anderson University in Indiana. Before playing on Saturday, the team had the opportunity on Friday to practice at the famous Hoosiers Gym in Knightstown, Indiana. This historic gym made famous from the movie,
Hoosiers, hosts practices and contests and the Principia players enjoyed the chance to practice on the Hoosiers court and hear more about this basketball classic. The game against Anderson was the first for the team and culminated their first week of all being together.
Although losing 49-79, the team did so many good things. They look forward to improving in their next game. Anderson had 17 members on the team and definitely had a height advantage, but the Panthers received many comments from individuals attending the game about their great hustle and never-give-up attitude. Anderson outscored Principia for the first three quarters. In the fourth quarter Principia played their best and tied Anderson in scoring for that quarter with 15 points.
Good to Know:
All players saw playing time and were flexible by playing different positions.
Nikki Matters led the Panthers in scoring with 29 points, shooting 11 for 26 from the field and going 8 for 11 at the free throw line.
Sophia Hathaway had 14 points and was 2 for 2 from the line. Nikki and
Anna Webster were top rebounders with 6 each.
They said it:
"This was a great way to kick off the season. Beginning with a visit to the Hoosier Gym and then playing a tough opponent on Saturday, made for a great weekend. I saw so many good things happen in the game and we know we can improve in those areas where we need to do better. Most importantly, the players are playing as a team and hustling to the end."
