Elsah, IL – Principia hosted DII Maryville University, falling to 2-1 on the season after taking a 7-2 loss.
A look at the matches:
The Panthers opened with uneven doubles play against a quality opponent.
Daniel Gomez and
Wyatt Dale picked up a great 8-5 win at the top spot.
Juan Segovia and
Drew Funke couldn't pull out a tiebreak at #2, putting the deficit at 2-1 going into singles. The lower half of the lineup struggled this evening against a deep, consistent Saints team. Gomez got the team's lone singles win at #1. He dominated the first set, let it get interesting with a narrow loss in the second, and cruised 6-1 in the third. Dale started hot with a first set win but ultimately lost in three sets, despite a decent overall performance. Segovia got down 4-1 but ripped off 5 straight games to take the set. Unfortunately, he also took a three-set loss.
Good to know:
Positive takeaways include three very competitive losses, one at #2 doubles in a tiebreak, two in third sets at #2 and #3 singles. The team looks to turn those into wins against another solid opponent this Saturday.
