Elsah, IL. - Principia women's tennis team earn their first win in the non-traditional fall season. Our #1 singles fought off 3 set points in the third set super tiebreaker to win the match. Camila Gomez, who plays in the number one singles and doubles position, earned two wins today. In doubles, she and partner Gaby Quintero blasted through their opponents 8-0 to make Principia their first point. Our second doubles team lost without earning a game. It was a rough start for the #2 team, Veronica Volkart and Caroline Carlson. Lewis and Clark only brought four competitors to the match, so they had their work cut out for them. Overall the Lewis and Clark team was able to win one of the doubles and two of the singles.
The teams split the singles matches. The #1 singles match was the most exciting of the day, with each player taking a set and the match being decided in a 10 point super tiebreaker. Camila was down 5-3 after making a few errors and the opponent hitting down the line backhands winners. After some terrific rallies and strong play by both players, Camila was down 9-6, facing three match points against her. The opponent was in a good rhythm with her serve and groundstrokes. Camila had to dig deep and play steady tennis to pull ahead of Lewis and Clarke and take a 10-9 lead. Camila held her serve and won 13-11. Veronica Volkart, #3singles, played steadily from the baseline and won her match 6-0, 6-4.
The team is readying for matches on Saturday, September 25th. Our top 2 players Camila Gomez and Gaby Quintero were accepted into the small college regionals this weekend in Kalamazoo, Mi. The rest of the team plays a scrimmage on Saturday at Webster groves.
