ELSAH, IL - The Principia Women's Tennis team competed well in their first match of the year at home against Missouri Baptist University. Both teams were originally scheduled to play Franklin College at separate times today, but Franklin had to cancel due to the winter storm, so the two teams decided to play each other instead.
Principia started strong by sweeping all three doubles matches, with two of the three going to a seven point tie-breaker. Number one pair, Camila Gomez and Gaby Quintero, were down 7-4 and came back to tie the match at 7 all, before winning the tiebreaker handily (7-3) with steady forceful ground strokes. At second doubles, Kelsie Huss and Veronica Volkart played a strong match and won 8-5. Principia's third doubles team, Caroline Carlson and Ruth Hummell, were also down 7-4, but played steady tennis to bring match back to even, and then dominated the tie-breaker.
Camila Gomez, Principia's #1 singles player, smashed forehands and ran her opponent around the court. Camila's blistering forehand kept her opponent off balance, and she won her match decisively 6-3, 6-1. The Panthers earned the winning point to clinch the overall match from strong play by #4 singles, Kelsie Huss, who won in dominating fashion 6-2, 6-1. Emma Franklin, playing #6 singles, also won her match 7-5, 6-3 with steady and decisive play.
