HILTON HEAD, SC - The Principia Women's Tennis team traveled to Hilton Head, South Carolina for spring break to play four outdoor matches in the Hilton Head Island Spring Tennis Fest. Their first match of the week came on Monday afternoon against Stockton University at the Shipyard Racquet Club.
The top of Principia's lineup fared much better than the rest of the team.
Camila Gomez, Principia's #1 singles and doubles player, won both of her matches. She dominated play in singles, giving up only one game, as her potent forehand and steady baseline play overpowered her opponent. In doubles, she and her partner
Veronica Volkart earned a solid 8-4 win.
Gaby Quintero and
Kelsie Huss, Principia's #2 doubles team, played a tough match and lost in the tiebreaker. The pair trailed several times throughout the match, but they managed to tie it up at 7 all. In the tiebreaker, they got behind 6-3 and held off a few match points, but they were unable to complete the comeback win.
At #2 singles, Quintero won the first set 6-3 with great offensive ground strokes that forced her opponent into errors. In the second set, both players held serve through the first eight games until Quintero was broken. While facing set point with her opponent serving, they played a point that included over thirty hits with both women moving each other around the court. Quintero forced a tiebreaker and came out on top 7-4, with long rallies dominating each point.
The rest of the singles lineup struggled against a deep Stockton team, with Principia only winning eight games combined across the four matches. The Panthers fell 6-3 overall to Stockton.
