ELSAH, IL - The Principia Women's Tennis team celebrated Senior Night on Monday evening during an exhibition against Lewis & Clark Community College in Hexberg. In between the doubles and singles matches, seniors Caroline Carlson and Emma Hanser were recognized in a short ceremony led by Coach Carney where they received a signed poster collage of their Principia careers. We are grateful for their contributions to the Women's Tennis program during their time at Principia!
On the court, the Panthers' #1 doubles team of Camila Gomez and Veronica Volkart had another comeback win. Down 7-5, they tied the match at 7-7 and then took control of the tiebreaker, winning 7-4. Gomez was hitting strong ground strokes to set up Volkart at the net. In the tie breaker, Volkart also hit some great cross-court forehands leading to strong volleys by Gomez. Principia's other doubles teams competed well with some great points, but they were not able to pull out a win.
Volkart moved up to #3 singles and had strong win. After losing the first set 6-2 and going down 3-1 in the second set, she started to play great defensive tennis, keeping her ground strokes deep and forcing long points. She caught fire and won the next five games to take the second set 6-3. Volkart continued her steady play and won the back-and-forth tiebreaker 10-7. This impressive win against a very strong player will prepare her well for the upcoming conference championships.
Gomez, at #1 singles, won her match decisively with her strong ground strokes. Her opponent was playing well and forcing long points, but Gomez's down-the-line backhand was flawless. Lewis & Clark won the other singles matches, but the Panthers played well and had some great moments despite not being able to close out games.
Up Next: The Panthers don't compete again until April 28th at Westminster College for their last conference match before the SLIAC Tournament.
