Although Fontbonne stands #4 in SLIAC standings with Principia at #6, the Panthers took it to Fontbonne with a 25-22, 25-19, 25-19 victory tonight.
Fontbonne tried tipping on Principia and then pushing them deep, but the Principia women stayed alert and ready to adjust. The backcourt passers were stellar tonight, with only 2 passing errors out of 52 passes. That ball control allowed Tara Edwards to move the ball around to all of the hitters, and Principia was determined to find holes in Fontbonne's fiesty defense.
The great passing made our Middles a big threat all night long, which opened up setter Tara Edwards to score 5 times with a dump to the open middle. Kiersten Andersen led the attack with 11 kills, hitting .348, and Anne Goodrich-Stuart and Katie Duntley both put 8 balls away. To round out the offense, Hillary Moser killed 5 balls and Catherine Speer added 4 more. The team hit .290 for the night - a solid offensive outing.
The team picked up 53 digs, andTeddye Shaffer was the foundation of the Panther defense, responsible for 15 digs and Goodrich-Stuart tallied 10. The defensive side of the court was balanced as well with Andersen and Ally Read each picking up 8 digs and Edwards earning 5.
The Panthers showed tough serving with 9 aces, and purposeful serving to take Fontbonne out of their gameplan. Read and Goodrich-Stuart both had key serving runs that helped Principia bounce into the driver's seat.
The Panthers travel to Louisville, Kent. this weekend to take on Spalding University and MacMurray College.
