The volleyball team traveled to compete against Monmouth College and Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday. Principia took a game from each opponent, but couldn't grab the victory.
It was a good day that gave the Panthers lots of opportunities to strengthen team play and compete with persistence. In the first match against Monmouth Principia put down 12 kills, but Monmouth recorded 16 and beat Principia 25-22. The Scots out hit the panthers the rest of the match, and although the Panthers picked up 60 digs (to Monmouth's 54) it wasn't enough to take the match. Katie Duntley led the offensive push with 11 kills (.227) and Kiersten Andersen and Anne Goodrich-Stuart each tallied 9 kills. The defense was scrappy with Goodrich-Stuart tallying a team high 17 digs, Kiersten Andersen 15 digs, and Teddye Shaffer 14 digs. Ally Read and Isabelle Tetu, were perfect from the service line.
In the second match against Iowa Wesleyan, the Panthers started out strong. the offense was clicking and Iowa Wesleyan didn't have an answer. Principia won game one handily. The Principia offense sputtered with the too many errors in the following games, which hindered Principia's ability to "play to win". There were too many communication break downs as well as ball control errors to ever get the rhythm of game one back. Principia staged several hard fought comebacks, but never could truly turn the momentum in their favor.
The Panthers' offense was led by Hilllary Moser with 5 kills (.300). the defense had 3 players digging in double digits (Teddye Shaffer with 16, Anne Goodrich-Stuart with 13, and Kiersten Andersen with 11). Goodrich-Stuart, Andersen, and Tara Edwards were perfect at the service line, and Moser and Duntley combined for 6 blocks.
Principia travels to St. Louis to take on Webster University Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
