Louisville, KY. -- Principia Women's Soccer started their SLIAC conference campaign today with a game in Louisville against foe Spalding.
After an exciting start with the ball in the Spalding defensive end, Spalding switched the tables and finished their first goal of the game. The Panthers and Eagles were pretty evenly matched for the rest of the half.
In the 56th minute of the game Spalding found the back of the net for a second time. Not to be outdone nor rolled over, Principia found the back of the net within a minute.
Chrissy Fredrikson saved a ball from going out and found
Clarice Bruch who then slid it across to
Sarai Marcano for the slot into the far corner. Revitalized, the Panthers went on quite a roll. Finally playing their brand of soccer meant they took control of the game: won 50/50 balls, kept the ball on the carpet, found feet. This led to a corner kick from
Emelie Fredrikson and a tying goal by Bruch.
But the game was again Spalding's when, with 9 minutes left, they finished one final opportunity and finishing the game 3-2.
Key moment:
The first goal was a complete team effort and really brought the Panthers to full life.
They said:
"The end result was heartbreaking after coming back from a 2-0 goal deficit. Spalding took advantage of our defensive lapse for the win but that's all part of the game. We are going to keep moving forward."
